European wasps in spring: why October is the time to find the nest
European wasp queens start new nests in spring. A nest found now is small and quick to remove; the same nest in February can hold thousands of wasps.
Short answer: European wasp queens come out of hibernation in spring and start new nests, often in the ground, in wall cavities or in roof spaces. A nest found in October or November is small and quick to remove. Left alone, the same nest can grow to thousands of wasps by late summer, when they are at their most defensive.
Signs of a nest:
- A steady line of wasps flying in and out of one spot, such as a hole in the lawn, a gap in brickwork or under roof tiles. - Wasps hanging around outdoor food, pet bowls or the bin. - Chewing sounds or a papery nest visible in a shed or eave.
European wasps are yellow and black with yellow legs, and unlike bees they can sting more than once. Don't block the entrance or pour anything into an in-ground nest; it usually makes them come out fighting.
We treat wasp nests the same day where we can, and if it turns out to be a honey bee swarm we arrange relocation with a local beekeeper instead of treating it.
Wasp nest treatment starts from $89. Call 0436 122 195 for a same-day booking.
