Possum removal laws in Victoria: what homeowners need to know

Possums are protected wildlife in Victoria. You cannot treat them like rodents, and off-property relocation is prohibited because relocated possums often die or create conflict in another territory.

The normal legal process is confirm the species, identify the entry point, use a humane catch and release cage, release the possum on the same property within 50 metres of the capture site after sunset, then seal the entry and install a possum box where appropriate.

The job fails when people seal the hole too early. That can trap an animal inside the roof or separate a mother from young. Proper possum removal is staged and documented.
