Roof rats become more obvious in Melbourne as nights get colder. The classic signs are scratching after dark, movement above bedrooms, droppings in the roof void, chewed fruit outside, greasy rub marks on beams and a sharp ammonia smell if the issue has been active for weeks.

Do not rely on bait alone. Bait reduces the active population, but entry points keep the problem alive. Tile gaps, eave returns, broken vents, downpipes, creepers and trees touching the roofline are the usual access routes.

The proper sequence is inspect, treat, monitor activity, then seal once the pressure drops. Sealing too early can trap animals inside. Waiting too long lets one visitor become a nest.
